Microdermal, or sometimes also called Dermal Piercing is a fun type of single-point piercing that allows us to install jewelry on flat surfaces of the skin.
They work by installing a small anchor a few millimetres under the skin, with a post protruding out for jewelry tops to rest. The skin underneath heals a small pocket around the anchor to secure it.
Because this is a single point piercing, the pain is actually minimal when compared to a traditional piercing!
After the anchor is securely healed under the skin, the jewelry top can be changed by the client. Lots of fun designs and gemstones are available to wear!
Dermal Piercings are priced individually (x1).
The cost of the piercing includes 1x Anchor with a basic Titanium Disc or Titanium Ball top (stock depending).

We only use Ti-6AL-4V-ELI ASTM F136 Implant Grade Titanium anchors that are made in USA. Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, this is the only type of Microdermal anchor that is safe to be worn inside the body!
Jewelry upgrades are available at extra cost 🙂
Solid Gold tops by BVLA can also be worn opening up for endless adornment possibilities!
This type of piercing allows us to pierce locations like chest, surface of the face, hips, necks, foreheads, and many other flat surfaces where a traditional two-point piercing is not possible.
Healing can take anywhere between 3 to 6 months to fully heal, but of course also depending on how careful you are of the placement!
It is also important to note that because the anchor is not actually installed that deep, this piercing is considered “Long-term temporary”, meaning: don’t expect it to last forever, but with proper care, this piercing can be enjoyed for years!
The risk that comes with this piercing is that it will eventually reject, and when the piercing does eventually need resetting, the scar it leaves behind is usually minimal.
And as with all jewelry that is meant to be worn in your body for long term, proper material MUST be used to help further reduce the chances of allergic reaction and rejection.
*While this type of piercing can be installed in lots of different areas on the body, there are some placement locations that we will refuse to install due to the safety and longevity of the piercing.
What’s the best location for microdermal piercings?
Think flat, fatty, and low movement.
For example, a fun way to adorn your navel is to get a dermal piercing instead of the traditional two-point navel piercing.
Safe and popular locations to consider: the sides of the face, on the forehead, along the cheekbone, around the eyes, nape of the neck, upper chest area around collarbones, along the neckline, on the cleavage, and sometimes depending on the lifestyle of the client, lower body areas like hips and belly are also possible.
Locations that we refuse installing are high impact/ high movement risky areas like fingers, arms, legs, toes, tongue, cheek, etc.
Photos of “Finger Dermal Piercings” are often shared on the internet but it doesn’t come with the warning that this location is very impractical to heal. This area is constantly exposed to impact and contamination, chances of healing and maintaining it safely is very unlikely. Even a simple snag can trigger the wound to reset and potentially have the entire anchor get pulled out!!
Same can be said for “Toe Dermal Piercings”.

Infected Finger Dermal!!!
We also deem (some) arm and leg locations to be risky, as these high impact locations can easily get snagged and cause the piercing to reject.

Risky placements!!
How to heal and maintain this type of piercing?
Neilmed Aftercare Spray is great for this piercing because of its surface-level cleaning. The aerosol spray can help blast away surface contamination and saline helps kill bacteria by drying it’s cell walls.
We suggest using Neilmed to spray the piercing at least two times per day, and always use a clean disposable tissue to carefully dry the area fully! Moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria.
Shower as usual – Practicing general hygiene every day is essential!
If the piercing is located on the body where there is sebum or sweat discharge, clean the area with a gentle cleanser in the shower will help clean the skin’s surface buildup.
It is important not to use heavy lotions and oily cleansers because extra products can buildup around the jewelry and irritate the site.
Always dry the piercing with a clean disposable tissue. Do not use towels or washcloths as they can harbor bacteria.
During the first week of healing, we highly recommend covering the fresh dermal piercing with a clean bandage before sleep. This will help further “set” the anchor when it is fresh, and will also help prevent the client from snagging it during sleep.
The piercing doesn’t “hurt” during healing, so the danger can also be from forgetting about the new piercing and snagging it accidentally!
And same with all piercings , you cannot go swimming during its healing duration!!
